How is the i-CAC index calculated?
The i-CAC index is the result of an in-depth, structured assessment carried out by contemporary art experts. It is based on a set of objective, concrete and verifiable criteria that measure the reputation, activity and recognition of a professional painter. The way the index is calculated is designed to ensure transparency and fairness for every artist assessed.
Assessment criteria
The analysis takes into account a wide range of factors, grouped into categories. Artists do not need to meet every criterion, but the more numerous and convincing the evidence, the higher the index is likely to be.
- Style, creativity, originality, quality, technique and medium of the artworks
- Auction sales recorded by official bodies and validated by auctioneers
- Number of lots sold at auction over the last 10 years
- Price levels achieved in sales, analysed across several channels
- Prices charged in galleries and on specialist online art marketplaces
- Art schools attended and qualifications obtained
- Partner galleries: number, reputation, presence in France and abroad
- Number of exhibitions at prestigious art fairs (in France and internationally)
- Prizes and awards received, and their standing and value
- Membership of recognised artistic institutions (academies, foundations, etc.)
- Volume and quality of media coverage: articles, specialist magazines, books
An analysis carried out by experts
Information is gathered from public sources or provided by the artist. If necessary, i-CAC may request supporting documents (invoices, certificates, etc.) to validate certain elements of the application. The data is checked, cross-referenced and weighted according to its impact on the artist’s recognition in the market.
The i-CAC index is not set in stone: it can be reviewed at any time during the certification period. Artists can request an index review if they feel their activity has changed significantly. The request must be backed up by supporting evidence (sales, exhibitions, awards, etc.). The higher the index, the more demanding the reassessment criteria.
Applying the index to price rating
Once the index has been awarded, i-CAC automatically calculates the value of an artist’s artworks according to their format. A “point-based” rating method is also available for those who prefer it. These tools make it possible to estimate the sale value of artworks consistently and rigorously.
The i-CAC index is therefore a serious benchmark for positioning an artist on a professional value scale, directly linked to the realities of the market.
